Was just going to release waiting for them to do artwork then no response back from then after repeated emails this is 6 years ago now. I was “signed” to the formerly named Downtown Artists way back in 2011 - 2012. Completed 2 songs for them and I was promised photo shoots, promo campaigns and 1 music video. None of this materialised. My music was then stolen and is now 100% owned by them. My voice, my words, my melodies. I contacted them back in 2016 to say I planned to have the tracks reproduced from scratch and re-recorded but I needed my stems for reference. This was refused. The package cost a total of £1600.00. Not including the travel costs in and out of London. All I ended up with was a poxy CD with the 2 tracks on. Such a shame as they were both easily 2 of the best pieces I have ever wrote. Beware, you’ll be invited to audition, accepted, told the cost, asked to sign, then thrown away.

So I also recorded two songs with then called Downtown Artists. Nothing ever really came from it and I was too given the same promises etc as you all I just forgot about it really and moved on. However I was shopping in Next at the beginning of this year and heard the song I had written myself and recorded playing in the shop. Its been years since I recorded with them. I mean I am sure Next haven't paid to get this music but still surely I should have been asked permission or something???

Is there anyway we can all get compensation from this company? I was scammed as a 16 year old girl back in 2013 right up until 2015. I also paid £1600 for two songs but nothing ever came of it. Ian De Sylva constantly used my voice on his songs and told me I would be compensated but I never was. I was so naive.

I was hired as a freelance videographer / video editor for this company on a couple of occasions. At first they seemed pretty legit and paid quickly for my first job, perhaps to earn my trust. However, it was after the second job they tried to be long with the payment (not answering emails, phone calls etc) although they couldn't really get away with it as I watermark all my work.

It wasn't too long before I figured out they were a bit dodgy, but it was then fully confirmed they were con artists when an artist I was meant to make a music video for, claimed they disappeared with his money which was about £1400 according to them, for the video (and I was supposed to earn only £500 from that - talk about an absolute rip off on the artist).

It's strange as the woman I was dealing with seemed quite nice, you wouldn't of expected this kind of behavior from her and her partner, but I guess that's what makes it all the more evil. I remember I once found her personal Instagram, if anyone wants it I can try find it again and post it on here, presuming she still has it!

The RS Artists agreement promised graphics, videos, whistles and bells. I received none of it. They have now stolen my stems and are refusing to respond to my email, disconnected all telephone numbers and once again changed information. I'm a sight impaired artist and put my trust in RS Artists to deliver. I have now found myself in a legal situation with them just to have my property returned which is worth roughly £2,000 (my master stems for 2 tracks). I am currently seeking legal advice and possibly drawing up a court case against them. I was informed by Ben (the Contractor) when asked for a direct contact for the company, to leave him out of it, had no response from Luis, the Producer I worked with when I requested my stems and so have had to report everything to the police and start drafting up court proceedings with a solicitor. I put a year of my life into these recordings travelling into London and out of London for each session for roughly a year which incurred travel costs.

I have been in the recording business for very many years and as I am sight impaired and have struggled so much with finding the right network of people, trusting people to do a great job, promotion, making waves in a minefield of an industry, I put my trust in RS Artists to do this job for me and I was severely let down. I do not recommend this company to anybody. Finding separate Contractors, Producers in cheaper studios and taking all control is a lot better than going with RS Artists (or whatever name they are trading under now).

reed the work on or after 1 October 2015, you can say:

“The Consumer Rights Act 2015 says that services must be provided with reasonable care and skill.

In my opinion, you did not use reasonable care and skill when you provided this service.

I want you to fix the problem/give me a price reduction.”

If they agree to re-do the service, arrange a date for it to be completed by. You’re legally entitled to have it done within a ‘reasonable time’. There are no exact rules for what a ‘reasonable time’ is, but you could try contacting similar service providers to get an idea of how long it should take.

If you’re getting a discount, you’ll have to agree the amount with the trader. It’s a good idea to start by suggesting a figure and explaining why you think it’s reasonable, then take it from there.

If you still haven't solved your problem

There are other steps you can take to solve your problem - these include using ‘alternative dispute resolution’, which is a way of solving disagreements without going to court.

I joined when they were RS artists, to be honest I told them I have no money, and he kinda said you can pay installments, I did pay a few sessions, didn't finish any songs, thankfully saw this before bothering to do anymore. They kept calling at first and I told them, stop calling cause I don't have any money, they did.. but I didn't know if they were fake or not although they seemed it. They changed producers twice while I was there, and they said they "lost" the USB hardrive the previous producer had my first song (almost finished) on when the first producer left. What's weird though is the producer is a REAL guy, he has top 5 best selling classical albums on spotify etc, he showed me, but he said "They haven't done your contract yet?" I said no, they never pushed me to sign it, I didn't and I'm glad cause I'd have maybe just signed and been stuck paying them the full amount but then I think they thought Id' just keep paying and then I don't know, they'd not be taken to court for not producing any results? The producers they hire are real producers who maybe don't know they're scammy. I genuinely think that. I don't know if the receptionists just need a job or they also are aware of the scam. But IAN, was the name of the guy who I auditioned with and agreed the program with, he never picked up a phone call or responded to a text after the first day and he had a beady look in his eye. So I'm glad I just saw this so I can just delete their info and forget about them, and I'm happy alot of your reviews say you've had success in music despite them. I've been scammed FULLY by modeling and talent agencies up to thousands of pounds before. Unless it's a well known ESTABLISHED company, just don't waste time. No upcoming agency is going to charge you when BIG COMPANIES DON'T! No proper agency that everyone knows, charges their talent, they take commissions only! So, why would a small company deserve/have earned your money without getting you any work first? Think this way, a real company, if they think you're going to sell and make them money, THEY WILL BUY YOU! as a product, they will PAY YOU, in advances or in studio time and pay for your recordings, marketing, EVERYTHING and then get money when YOU have earned aswell! No company charges to represent you.. stating in the contract " we don't gaurantee work" ://///// wtf is that. That's THE RED FLAG. These scams are EVER Growing because the loop hole "We can't gaurantee work" gets them off any accountability in court. There should be a business law around it to protect our money.. especially when the company, doesn't even offer you any real auditions afterwards or connect you with any ACTUAL business contacts :/ think about that. Unfortunately there is no law to protect us really, so you gotta make sure you don't pay on the spot.. and investigate FULLY! Ask around, check if anyone's ACTUALLY had work from them. If you CAN'T find previous clients of theirs to ask, then there are no clients mate.

Hi guys, in 2008 when they were called Play studios, I also got scammed. They called in a AR representative from Sony apparently to even set the scene that I was so close. Paid a fortune. I am gobsmacked . This bogus place did this to me when they were
Known as Play Studios.
Same audition, same pricing .
At the time (and thank GOD I didn’t scrap them project , look me up as The Nightmare Arcade) I was famous on MySpace , even on the official Gorillaz Top 8. These guys said “oh , why are doing this ? If you want to be on our label , scrap the characters!” I had built up a following , performed in my hometown , even gave my CD album to the Gorillaz creators in PERSON, and these guys , sort of dismissed what I did. I was devastated so I went solo and kept the cartoon band project as it was online , because I had done already too much.
They kept me for a while , recording songs etc: then , they changed their company name and then the people I recorded with , disappeared . Which meant I was dropped. I gained nothing from them. I’m angry , and I want my money back. I want to expose these guys.
I’m glad I still have my project and my sanity left but , not my cash. I was just a kid, they took advantage of my naive and ignorance.

I did an audition with them and they said that they chose me out of loads of people so I signed the contract and paid them 370 pounds deposit and 120 pounds for a music session 2 months ago and I haven't heard from them since. I wrote a song and the producer Chris didn't like it so wanted me to come up with something else and all we did in the session was try and come up with lyrics and do some of the background track but no singing. So I want them to write me a song and do the music and I just go there to sing it but after seeing all of this I just want my money back but there not answering the phone!!

I searched for something like this before my audition and just did not see this - but it confirms absolutely everything I felt in my gut. Daniel was OVER complimentary and im sure he thinks i missed his eyes light up when I said this was my first experience of anything like this. The other warning sign was that he made a HUGE deal about how many people audition and how few are "chosen"... went through the instagram and don't get me wrong, the previously "selected" people are all good but I'm talking, VERY average good. Some without being mean are plain tone deaf which is upsetting as they have been given false hope for a dream that just wont happen. Looks for these guys on company check and they have had at least 5 companies dissolved with the same business plan. They're bread and butter is overcharging hopeful artists for mediocre songs and recordings that go absolutely no where. Do not do it.

Ok so it’s been some time now since I posting this warning regarding this scam outfit. I lost count of how many times they’ve changed their name but be assured that the scam practice remains.
Anyway as a great way to conclude this with the news that for the past year my daughter has been 1/3 of pop group M.O and their debut single Bad Vibe peaked at number 18 in the official charts. This followed her appearance on xfactor which she reached boot camp. Now she has been performing in various television shows such as BGMT, Blue Peter, BBC not to mention interviews and promotions on capital fm, kiss fm, bbc radio 1 and many more. She also performed at v festival, limf, tramlines festival, Nickelodeon slimefest. She performed in Ibiza and set to tour very soon. Without going into ALL the successes my daughter has gained because of her talent... let’s just say this has to be the ultimate proof that this company couldn’t spot talent if it landed on their mothers in a bright pink spaceship screaming Highway To Hell through a traffic cone. As for my daughters. Watch this space.

Exact same thing happened to me, nearly word for word what people have discussed; they approached me on a performing site, asked for the money upfront, called the next day after the audition to say I was one of the 5 selected after 250 auditions this month.
“Dan” told me he was managing director of the company RSArtists and that I would need to confirm my place within 24 hours. I said this feels all to rushed and pushy and I’ve never had to pay for my work before. Dan was taken aback when I said I wanted to know more about the company and that he hasn’t answered all my questions so it didn’t sound legit (before I even saw this thread!). Even after all this, he kept dodging questions and he told me to call him tomorrow to confirm my place or to come in to see them with the money. Nope.

ALSO! You still pay for studio/producers/A&R/Assistance etc. when you're signed, when you sign a contract say for 1 mill (like the big deals i.e. interscope, universal) this is a LOAN. You will need to pay it back through sales!

Music industry is a lot like sales, you're selling yourself, your work etc. Everything make out of sales will go straight back to the label. It's not until you're really successful that you start seeing a penny.

Is this Ian guy, Ian De Sylva? A musician himself? I mean the only thing that really takes me back on their page is the lack of success, only 2 signed artists (who'm I've never heard of) & these campaigns they speak of? Where's the evidence for it?

No label would charge however technically they don t promote themselves as a label as such but a development company. It's like this if you need help with funds you'd pay a financial advisor and there are some legit development companies that help artists like courses that you pay for however you wouldn't need to audition as you're paying for a service.

1800 for TWO sessions at a studio? Come on people! This is why you need to look into other studios and see how much they charge and I can assure you it wouldn't be that much, I did work in Bristol at studios and some of these producers would charge 30-50 per session, some offer EP packages etc. If you have 1800 to pay these people then use that money to go studios for yourself.

These people will go bust again as they've been dissolved before, they clearly don't understand scamming isn't a longterm business and money always runs out. They don't have the connections they make out because if they did they would be in business through those connections and making money off them rather than starving artists.

This industry is full of devils, I mean truth is you can be scammed by big time labels themselves, look at artists like Rita Ora and def jam, Porcelain Black and red one, Brooke Candy, RCA. Although they had videos/music on iTunes they were held back in their careers.

Prince says himself these contracts is signing up for slavery. A lot of artists are speaking out about the shadiness of the business. All a label is good for is funding for better quality production i.e. music/videos/promoshoots, connections to producers, promo. All these things you can do yourselves, there are many high calibre producers/sound engineers around if you dig hard enough.

Don't let these ass holes drag you down, keep going! Think of all the artists who've made it that have had to go through the same things as this to get to where they are.

Downtown have now changed there name to RS Artists, I can confirm this due to my music being broadcast-ed on there new website when i left earlier on this year, due to being messed around.

I would suggest that unless you like chucking money away to not go with them!!!
I am 18 and I feel like a right mug, I was first contacted by them in the summer of 2016 and I got my hopes up instantly, I was so happy that someone was finally listening to my music.

However a year down the line I feel like a right mug! My parents money has gone down the drain and payed the wages of the people ripping us off!!
However I did come out with 2 singles, Even though they where released (uncompleted) without my permission.
I am still very proud of what I have produced, however I find it very cheeky they are still broadcasting my music on there website! I believe (Correct me if i'm wrong) that the contact would be voided if the company itself went bust?? Therefore they have no right to be displaying my music.

If you go onto RS Artists you can clearly see my song being advertised (Lucina Luchii - Fly High) They are still making money off my songs... that I wrote and I haven't received a penny from them!

This is unbelievable the amounts of people this company has ripped off. I had the same experience in 2012-2013 after making 2 original tracks and I thought I got scammed badly at £1,500, but some of you have paid 2-3k for the same thing?! They obviously have no price on what they're willing to steal from you. This should be put a stop to once and for all! I feel sorry for the talented music producers who created fantastic tracks and then have to send you to Dexter or Katie Maccan or some other idiot who isn't good enough to help promote you. Yeah the truth is Katie Maccan is a shit singer who wasn't good enough, so she sits in the receptionist seat answering phone calls and emails feeling jealous of everyone, because she was never talented enough herself!!! And Dexter is the biggest flaw in the company creating cover art that a 5 year old could produce!

I Know a few of the featured artists you see on their site and can confirm none of them are wealthy. those kids worked hard to get their money to pay for the studios and got the exact same form of disrespect. NONE of those artists work with them anymore, they simply keep the names and faces as a back up for their money making scam.

sure they provide the experience of recording professionally and having two songs but they do NOTHING to promote, nothing to elevate or develop artists. they just take money and let them use their studios. once the music is done they never heard from downtown again. try chasing them and they ignore emails/calls especially when they've received all the money...

find an independent producer or just a recording studio and develop yourself. theres youtube, Soundcloud social media. market yourself don't pay these people not to do it for you...

I been offered a development deal after an audition by an Ian from Reagents Street Artists, a production company in Soho.

Are they the same company as Downtown Artists and Play ???? that dissolved. I was offered a similar deal with them asking money and declined to sign.

Am asked to pay a deposit of £370 in by monday + £120 ×13 more installments for two studio recordings, a video promo, filmed studio performance, album cover, and pr via partner.

Sounds suspiciously odd and just fact checking in case I am paranoid as some say.

I co-run Charthouse music, who like D/A do artist development, but that's where the similarity ends.
It's so sad that there are so many horror stories on this board. Music should be something that is joyful and fulfilling and there are companies and people who just leave a bad taste in the mouth . Don't get me wrong, I don't have a problem with charging for recording services,(we do) what I do have a problem is with promising things that they just cant deliver or just blatantly lying which is unacceptable at best, but to do it to singers who are generally inexperienced about the music industry is abhorrent. My advice to everyone is anyone charging you money (including us) ....beware! Find out who they've worked with, what success they've had and look at their reputation and honesty. As we know everything and everyone can be found online so there should be no excuse for not finding out, as you all have done on this board.
As for us at Charthouse, yes we do charge for artist development but we offer free advice and help to anyone, there's no 'sell' or 'deposit' to do our program its about genuinely wanting to help artists because as a team at Charthouse we've all been there so we know how hard it is! I was at Downtown Artists and Katie Biddiss/ Katie Maccann was a bully. She used to blank me purposely and speak sarcastically when she did acknowledge me. I remember when she asked me to put a wedge under the door for her in a bitchy way. She always used to rudely interrupt my sessions with the producer. I am so sad that I find this now...
My parents game me their last money to this company because they believed I had it in me and because they wanted me to succeed.
I recorded two amazing songs there, but agree with absolutely everything that is written so far.
After my promotion meeting, I was disgusted, fully realizing how these guys work - they are full-time liars.
I told him I do not have the money for a music video, and suddenly he replied he has a meeting and asked me to leave immediately, not even allowing me to put my coat on, sending me off with a huge smile on, enjoying obviously "kicking me out". Haven't heard from these pricks since.
I truly hope more people will find this link, I will do my best to spread it.
I do not really have anything else to add, as it has all been written - I only have bad words, but I will keep them for me.

PS: I worked with Sean (the producer) and he was amazing - if you still want to record, I suggest you choose him.

I received a call the following day to say I had been successful and to come sign a contract then was told I had to pay £1200 towards touring costs, studio time and promotion costs. I've got one song on iTunes that they've put on there for me but I want to end my contract with them asap.. Has anyone gotten to this stage? And if so will my iTunes account (made by them) be affected or deleted if I end my contract with them? this blog has resulted in a collosal loss of prospective payments and for that I'm happy. Although I won't rest until this company disappears. Nobody lies to me to get my money and gets away with it. Like I said IAN! If you are being dishonest to me in any way, you will regret it. So they defrauded me of £900 and as a result you've lost at least 10 times that at a conservative estimate. Power to the people and down with the music industry snakes and fraudsters.

Thank you for this!!! Lifesaving! I was messaged on twitter today 12.5.16 by a Casting agent from social-worx.com and she asked me: "Hi, are you in the UK? I'm asking since one of my clients is auditioning singers in London very soon, if you can sing email me your number to ...... (-;" So I messaged back and gave my email and emailed her my email asking "What kind of singers are you looking for?" a few hours later I got a phone call from this company http://damusicgroup.co.uk/ at 5.49pm and this lady rang me and rambled on about a lady and how she got my details and asked me about my singing experience and then my location and she was very keen and pushy and I didn't feel very comfortable with it. She was very much like go and check out our Facebook page I want to book you in for an audition this weekend and I said I was unsure as I'm not sure if I am free and she kept saying where do you live and it should be easy for you to get down here as your nearby and it will take you roughly an hour or so. Despite me saying I'm unsure if I can she booked me anyways saying Sunday at 2pm. I asked if there was anymore dates and times for auditions instead and she was like no, as there is other companies that use the studios like ITV etc I asked her a few times about this and she kept repeating herself. I also kept saying I wasn't sure and I wasn't really free and everything but she didn't seem to get the hint. Then I said can I bring my little sister along as she sings and she was like yes tell me about her, so I did. She was incredibly pushy, rushed me, and speedy, I had a gut feeling it isn't good. So she said she would phone me tomorrow to confirm and everything and email me details in 5/10mins. So I called her again an hour later and she said most of the above again and still had not heard from her. So I did some stalking of their social media channels and website everything and saw it was fine, then I asked a few of my friends.

Then I asked my friend and she told me about her experience (the above) and she said this “Same logo, they tried conning me, you audition, then they call u the day after, let me ring you pls. And say they want you, but they want money, call me then in 30 mins tho, watching a film atm, they just tweet you, then ask u to come for an audition, you go and sing into a mic at a recording studio they say you are amazing but they are seeing lots of amazing people, so you may not get chosen (BUT you are chosen!!) they call u back the next day and ask you to sign some papers (THERES NO LONG CONTRACT THOUGH!) I asked for a contract to read (as they r usually 200 pages long) they didn't have one!! And on top of that they want around £1,500 to record you but all they are is a studio to record with NOT an agency that is going to make you famous - they are basically conning you!"


I also found a bad review about them on Facebook "only found one bad review so far "Started off well but eventually fell apart. Oh well I own x2 great original songs, glad I left. This company have now disappeared, funny that!"


I found they have a second twitter account and a second facebook page with a different name called Downtown artists?! Even though their website and social media is D/A music group. I strongly urge you to investigate this, its sad to know so many people have paid these people already thousands of pounds and have lost out. It needs investigating as what these people are doing is wrong and immoral. Especially to young aspiring talent and parents who want to get out there. My friend, after this bad experience she refuses to go out there and go for her dream and sing and perform because she so strict, careful and worried and doesn't want to end up in a bad situation. Luckily I have found out all of this, but so many people don't know and its important to tell them as well as all the other similar companies out there that are conning innocent people!

I truly can't believe how much of a bullshit company D/A is.. I was supposed to audition today but while doing my research I stumbled upon this thread, no way am I gonna go. I'm just a bit worried because before knowing it was just a scam I had confirmed I would be there but I'll guess I'll just make up some bullshit excuse which they seem to excel at as well. I'm afraid to confront them about the scams because they have my phone number and email address and potential blackmailing worries me. Just knowing they have my contact details is enough for me that I don't want to create further problems. I wouldn't have hesitated to confront them had I not shared my privacy with them so I regret doing that.

However, I'm sure there is a way to report them to someone so that they don't know who exactly is accusing them (and therefore cannot blackmail). For example I'm sure that the right people at powerful corporations such as Sony or the BBC could put an end to D/A? Also, is there a way to report them to the police? I think this thread and any texts or emails from D/A asking for money is enough evidence to close them down... Also it is probably possible to gather evidence from other (legit) recording studios and labels in the area that might be aware of D/A's scams.

On another note, they state on their website (http://damusicgroup.co.uk/about-us/) that artists such as David Bowie and the Beatles have recorded in their studios. Do you think that is true? Lying about that would involve a hell of a lot of people what with the artists' team being able to sue D/A. Luckily for D/A and unluckily for the rest of us, David Bowie and the most part of the Beatles are no longer alive to provide confirmation that they have indeed recorded in their studios.

This comes at a time when I'm completely lost in what I want with my life. I had always believed I could rely on music, and in a way truly believed that if people in the industry saw talent they would help them reach their career goals not just exploit them for their money. I knew scams existed in all other industries, especially modelling (check this page on how NOT to get scammed by fake modelling agencies http://www.topmodeluk.com/dont-get-scammed/4585719746 - unfortunately I wasn't yet able to find the equivalent for the music industry) but I really had always thought that the music business cared about raw talent lol bullshit. This truly came as a slap in the face and a wake-up call for me. I will definitely be more cautious when 'noticed' by agencies.

Please please if you are contacted by D/A do not jump right into it just for the sake of being 'signed' (because truly you are not)! Do not settle for them as they are worthless pieces of trash and you deserve much more attention and guidance than what they offer.. I didn't even go to the audition (and won't) but I see right through them thanks to all of your posts. This student from MidKent College (http://www.midkent.ac.uk/news/college-news/young-musician-signs-agency-contract/) auditioned and signed for D/A. Although he seems quite happy with his decision, he clearly fell right into D/A's scam as he states 'I was one of about 200 people invited for an interview with Downtown Artists but they only asked five of us back to record some tracks'. The same story again and again..

Parents with children who are passionate about music, make sure they understand the RISKS of the music industry from the beginning. Although our own passions may blind us to some aspects of it that we wish were not true, crooks ARE OUT THERE. THIS IS NOT SOLELY ABOUT THEM STEALING YOUR MONEY. THEY WILL BOOST UP YOUR EGO ONLY TO CRUSH IT. I know I would much rather suffer myself than see my child suffer so before your child goes in for an audition or gives money to D/A, DO YOUR RESEARCH. IF after reading this post you decide to continue your affiliation with D/A you are completely entitled to do so. I am not judging you. But please, keep an eye open, and make sure that you only make this decision after doing thorough research - this is true for artists & parents (especially those of underage potential artists as it is your job to make sure that they do not get let down in the process of fulfilling their dreams).

I have been at Downtown artists for a while and they show no sign of caring for your welfare. Downtown artist are simply not ambitious and I agree that they are wanting money probably for habits. Some are ex singers that didn't make it. So they are probably bitter to let anyone good actually succeed. They have never ever given me any confidence boost words or anything, even though I'm the nicest person to people. They seem a bit jealous and those type of people should not be stopping artists from succeeding.

Ive had the same experience. except mine has been good and bad. Ive got two great singles released. My producer Chris was amazing and I couldn't have asked for better help from him. if i didn't like something we would start the song from the beginning. so recording wise the experience was amazing as I now have two songs on itunes, google play etc. However ive paid my full sum of money which I thought was quite good for a London studio, which it is. The thing that let me down the most was the promotional side of things. I was originally assigned to Dexter who was just a waste of time and space. he didn't know what he was doing and would just talk complete bull shit. luckily dexter has now left and has been replaced by someone called Rachael. Rachael has been nothing but helpful. the same as Katie, ive only met Katie a handful of times but she has been nothing but nice to me, if I cant get ahold of someone I always email her because she chases them up and comes back with a response for me within an hour. However ive had two meetings with Josh and on the second meeting he told me exactly the same as what he told me the first time. it was as if he was reading it all from a book. The promotion has been lacking. only a few of their artists are displayed and advertised on their website. When I asked why this was they replied with "once the public is interested in an artist and asks the company about them then they upload things about them onto their website and social medias to advertise them" now this to me made no sense. surly they would need to advertise their artists in the first place for the public to know who they are in order to gain an audience for the artist. Ive had both my songs listened to by BBC introducing, and have had gigs sent over to me by Rachael which they expect me to play at. However when I emailed asking if they could produce music sheets for my singles so myself and friends could learn to play them they said they couldn't provide them. what kind of music label cant produce music sheets to their own singles they helped to produce?
I also had the same experience with the music videos. they wanted me to pay more money towards them which I refused as I didn't have the money and could do it all for free from home as I have friends who study media and filming. I did however get a free demo made. We are currently looking at making a music video for my second single which has been left down to me to do again. However they have never advertised or shared my single or music video on their website or social media. Ive had to gain an audience by myself. considering this was a part of the contract.. its very bad of them to not be pushing me as an artist to do better. you would think because they want to make money they would be pushing me more to do gigs etc.

So josh tried to get me to come in really soon and I said I had been doing some research and confronted him with the scam accusations! He suddenly was very jumpy and ended the phone call by saying I need to go experience life and travel more and then come back and pursue music, weird as for the last week he couldn't wait to get me in the studio and wouldn't stop emailing about the fee etc!

If you are going ahead with them make sure your confident 100% and have researched! Luckily I hadn't payed anything so I'm safe! Good luck ✌

Downtown Artists are complete liars, I know of several people who have been through them paying something from £1600 upwards, and again they all say that they've been the top 5 picked out of over 250 applicants. LIES. I even went to watch their studio performances, they literally accept anyone in, even the complete tone deaf and least musical beings of the planet. They are NOT a label, again another LIE. And they say they promote you, honey, there was zero promotion for myself or any of the other people I know, so save your money you can get your own music recorded for much cheaper and use your own money to advertise yourself. The staff are rude and arrogant, and you have to chase them up constantly and they keep passing you on to other colleagues, all of which have different lies to tell. Don't waste your time, money or talent.

Hi, As someone who is trying to make it in the music industry and being a musician (not a singer or artist). One thing for sure stands out... All the music is really poor,no production,no managment,no vision, no modern sounds,lame approach. Im in liverpool and there is a hell of a lot of talent in London. They should be putting a lot more effort in for these artists. I agree with Ben, it stinks. The cover story is 'we'll do this and that for you+you will audition etc'... In a nutshell, everyone is in, as long as you got the 2k. Well done for spreading the word... Just simply go into any studio in uk and they will provide the same service :)

I don't agree that sweating your ass off is the way forward. You have got to look at the people in charge of getting you radio play and promotion. If they are not doing enough to help artists, then they have a bitter problem and are going no where in life. It's not hard to help an artist be successful. However, it appears to be their choice who they bring through the door. If they are not doing anything, then they are lazy or jealous of you. They fully well know that they have the power to negotiate with the majors, as majors only like signing people managed these days in London. If they are not doing anything, you can't force them. It's a bit of luck. Also, if you look at their page, I see no pop artists. Bizarre. They go for who is likeable to them.

I went for the sudition sunday 31 jan 2016 after being invited by a lady hearing me sing on the train. I went, i auditioned, it was odd. In the reception they had rihanna playing on a tv who was basically prostituting herself on stage, thats not music thats a shame! Straight away the guy was talking about labels looking at me as a business and if i can make money and then he said about the investment i would have to make which was £1800 and payable in installments to record two tracks to professional standard then push it to managers, booking agents labels. Then release the tracks on itunes, spotify. This can all be done by myself. Plus i played guitar and sang an original song of my own which they then recorded, but did not send me, i hope they do not keep this and use for themselves!
He called me back today saying they want to work with me. then i found this. I already had the feeling like they just wanted money. What is stopping them from saying yes to everyone that auditions just to get their money?
Plus doing music is not about getting famous for me, of course would be great for lots of people to hear and like my music but what is important is the message and focus and then it should spread by its self as now days alot of artists are growing a fan base online or word of mouth. If it is meant to be it will be. Its not about striving for fame but if something is really from your heart it will be felt by others, fame is not a goal but can be a by product. Stay humble its not as glamourous as it seems look how many famous people are really unhappy and got into drugs and killed themselves or got killed.

If the same amount of people that chase fame, also chase saving the environment building communities, making sure we have trees, clean air , water, organic food wouldnt this be a better world to live in for al of us?

Question your motives, ideals, goals, are they yours? where do they come from and where are they going ? do they serve the ego or the whole? The truth is always there, we always know, just be open to acknowlegding and listening to it. Get the bull shit detector here and listen for yourself!

I just went to my audition and I met the guy called Iain and he said I did great and that I really had it. Me made me believe that's something amazing was going to happen with my music. Lucky I got back home and found this comments. This really pisses me off! I was feeling excited and proud of my self to then find out its all a scam. I thought it sounded doggy when he mentioned all that money. No way I would pay that much! Fuck that! I thought I would be feeling amazing at the end of this day but Insead I feel like a fool. I auditioned for downtown artists last Tuesday and although I thought I sounded terrible, surprisingly I was offered a place! I went to DA a week later to discuss the contract and what's expected of me. The American called Josh asked for a straight up payment of £350 and right now, with Christmas just around the corner, money is so tight. I ended up paying £50 just to show them that I am interested and keen to record with DA. I was a bit confused as to why I needed to pay money straight away, but Josh said it was to 'confirm' my place... Which was a bit odd? He said if I didn't give any money then there was the possibility that I'd lose my place or something like that? So far for me that's the only really dodgey experience I've had. However, if you look online, to record with a producer at a studio in London it can cost you up £3000 and sometimes more! So the fact that you can record two professional sounding songs with the company is In fact saving you a bit of money! Right now, seeing posts like this and seeing loads of people saying that DA are a scam company is filling me with doubts, however I would say success is down to the individual, not the company. If you push yourself enough, create good catchy songs, have the right look about you, try to improve yourself every single day and have true passion for music, I honestly reckon you can go far! The reason why I'm going to carry on with this company is because there's nothing I want to do more than to make professional sounding music and they will provide me with the help I need to do that! Even if it's only a little which I hope it's not, it's still help! It's starting steps and that's all I really need at the minute! For those of you that feel like you've been robbed, I truely am sorry that you feel that way! But if you recorded two good sounding tracks with the company, then they have really delivered, its just things haven't worked out afterwards. The company don't promise fame and success, just two songs that they push to the public! Sorry to those of you that don't agree with me but that's just my personal opinion at the end of the day! If it all goes well I'll let you know and if things go terribly I shall let you know aswell!

George, you argument is quite weak tbh. I currently go to a studio where I pay £40 for two hours. My studio has had a lot of famous urban artists come through. DA charge £300 for a studio which is not that equipped tbh. The big studio in their premises is ONLY used for auditions. They take you to a very small studio upstairs with not that great equipment. You don't pay £1900 for promotion unless you're going ham on it. If you're paying a lot of money for promotion, OBVIOUSLY you want to get promoted to the best of their abilities. BUt if you're struggling to get 5 followers on SoundCloud then that raises a real alarm. I can level with you when you say that you have to be independent however you are going to need a few of your peers to help you with putting yourself out there. Surely £1900 is enough, more than enough tbh to get your material on all digital outlets. They also say the promotion deal includes being booked for gigs. You really shouldn't be paying to play at gigs. You don't anyways. And they can ONLY give you gigs at small local pubs near the studio. They can also deceive you in thinking that there will be a 'music industry observer' at the gig. They say you will get airplay. That really doesn't cost money. Maybe a bit but not a massive amount. Even BBC Introducing, the network that makes you submit music to Radio1Xtra doesn't ask for a fee. And even that, it's not certain you will get any airplay and sometimes it can take up to 6 months for the song to get played on air. If you pay the money and you don't get airplay, then what happens? As an artist development company, they should help you to become a better artist. Are they really? Honestly the mixes and masters are quite weak. I can't lie the producers are quite decent and they make good music but not music that costs nearly 2000. And they charge 100 for a mix and master? Why would they deliberately mislead people for no reason? Why would they deliberately say to you that you have been 'chosen' from 250 when you haven't? Why would they say to you that the money you pay them is non refundable?? It's quite conspicuous that they are scamming you. I'm getting a full EP done for 300 off somewhere else. I had a discount because I'm a 15 but the cost original was 600 and that included mixing AND mastering. I will link you also to the studio I'm talking about. To conclude, you shouldn't really be paying large amounts of money for basically management. They should pay for you, with the exception of maybe studio time. But even their studio prices are preposterous. They target young musicians and parents that don't know a lot about the industry so they can get their money. Artists at DA who think that DA are not scams are more or less wealthy people who lack knowledge about the industry. They claim to be in partnership with Sony and BBC. Guess what I did? Contacted them. And guess what they said???

For the 1800 you get 24 hours of studio time

at the linked studio the unsigned deal is 70 hours for 1400... you could do the best part of an album. And I'm sure if you did around that will be the case with a lot of studios out of the city.

I was "signed" with this company in August 2012. I couldn't believe what I was being told and thought I was about to start my music career. The first contract seemed straight forward enough, except for the fact of payment of course. I just presumed that because it was an independent company that's why they wanted money from you. I worked with a producer named Chris, he was awesome. We put 2 really great songs together, then came the meeting with Ian. He started me off by saying he loved the songs that Chris and I had worked on, one of them was a potential hit and that he liked my new image and dress sense, then came the "now we need more money for a music video and promotion costs". In the end I just left and never contacted them, they didn't contact me either. To this day, I always thought that I was the one who left them, but they didn't want me in the first place. My heart is broken. How can people do this to struggling musicians? As if we aren't skint enough already. Oh well, at least I got to see the true face of the music machine, it was ugly.

I am 100% interested in that (@michalis). I have finished my demo and I have "£50 outstanding". I simply asked if I could use that leftover £50 for another one hour session to record a cover or something and they told me that that 50 pounds cannot be used for that because its going towards promotion. Which is rubbish because I know they will ask me for a separate fee for promotion which I obviously am not going to pay!

Do they really think people aren't going to catch on?! We need to do something to stop others from being exploited like this. I had to loan money from one of my parents who didn't even have the money in the first place! And I even told them at one point I was struggling to get the money - they did not even bat an eyelid. Enough is enough!

Well no, I am a fierce sales person, and I've seen those tricks, the worst possible, playing with people's vulnerabilities.
My mind was made up before I started my audition, when he mentioned money, that I won't be making as an "artist" but that they'll be making on my back. If I ever get cast for my voice, I don't expect to pay people to sing, but to be paid by people to sing....makes sense?

I didn't ever go to the audition because I could already smell how weird these people are when they called me up. To be honest, I've worked in the industry as a singer/songwriter and I never had to pay anything. I'm the talent and therefore they pay me. I told them on the phone that I think it's a scam and that what they are doing is bad. Just bear that in mind when you're looking for opportunities, you don't need to be paying anyone. If anything, they should pay you.

I've signed a contract with Downtown last year, and everything seemed great to me until the promotion part. My producer was great and I had a say in how my songs turned out, but that was it.
The worst of all is Dexter, who claims he'll do so many things, send your single out to labels and radio stations, organise gigs, and so on. But absolutely none of that happened. They didn't even try. I ended up making the music video, and only after pestering them about it for 2 weeks they brought a little traffic to it. And after that nothing, they haven't contacted me since.

We haven't handed over any money and nor will we be.
What does upset me though is they are taking money from a disabled child with the dreams of being a star so unfair.

i'm the biggest mug of all, ive paid nigh on 2000 for this couple years ago, gave me the crap about I was chosen with 4 others out of 250 people. then I turned up to start the sessions of creating 2 songs and there was about 15 people in waiting room hahaha. 4 chosen my arse. anyway I managed to get in 1 "2 hour sessions " in the studio each month so its taken forever to finish the songs. producer was alright to be fair, knew his stuff but his ideas were final so I mostly just gave in and let him do everything which aint ideal really. I finished the songs and he mixed them and they actually done a decent job on them, I cant argue with that. ive got 2 decent songs to do what I like with which is great, is it worth 2 grand though... is it bollox. next comes the "promotional" side of things. you go to see dexter, a complete cock who thinks hes simon fucking cowell, he only finished school a couple of years ago, never played an instrument in his life and he tells you how to perform your songs better, write better songs, and how to use facebook to promote your music. I learnt how to create a music page and write statuses about my music, cheers dex that'll hold me good sted. next comes the music video, you don't have to pay anything for them they are completely free apart from £700. I called it a day after that. they told me id get local radio airplay with the songs (didn't happen) regular showcases to play the songs live (didn't happen) and they would promote the songs all over the place (they promoted them briefly on their website, hardly all over the place). any mums and dads out there whos young ones tell about this company, do yourselves a favour and go record their songs in a studio and pay the normal £300 to £500 price it costs to do so, ive done 3 songs with a producer I know and its been great, cost me £400, no difference in quality and better because I got my say on the songs. Then promote yourselves by sending the songs about. you don't need these people, they genuinely are a scam and not worth a penny of your money. I know a few parents strung along and they regret it aswell. aint fair to do this to people.

I cannot begin to thank all of you for your comments. My daughter just moved to London to study popular music and is been there for less than a month. She saw the ad to audition with this company and their approach to her was exactly, to the word, what I have read on this blog.

She was absolutely convinced this was a solid opportunity. Her boyfriend also went to the meeting. This person said his name was Josh. He said that he needed an answer by Friday giving her no more than 48 hours to get an answer. She sent me a contract which was vague and would've given the rights (20%) to any contract or job offer she received if they are able to demonstrate that they had a role in bringing them together.

The other thing that caught my eye was that, because my daughter is just a senior, they said that they would supply the song writers and musicians. The rights would be shared for any produced music. And yet, my daughter had to pay 100% of the recording studio fees.

As a father, I naturally want to be able to help my daughter. Saying no to her was like saying no to her dreams. No matter how much reason I had to exercise caution, she was convinced that if she did not act quickly she would lose a wonderful opportunity.

Your blog put everything into perspective and help her understand that there are many misleading characters out there who try to take advantage of your naïveté. My rule of thumb is… if you don't know who you're dealing with or are unfamiliar with the sector, find someone you trust who can help.

Same thing happened to my 17 year old daughter. Thankfully we ascertained it was a scam before we read this post. The moment they asked for money the alarm bells started ringing! Worryingly she saw the advert on The Voice website. Very surprised that the BBC would allow them to advertise through them.

Hi Ben i was just online reading your blog about 'Downtown Artists' i am ever so sorry to hear that you have also gone thru shyte with these people. Unfortunately I am in the same boat where i have just finished Paying the total of £1900 for my material which was 2 songs. Fortunately the production from cornel was really good so i have walked away with 2 pretty decent songs but they had the audacity to ask for a further £700 for the filming of a music video to go along with the single however i am a tight ass when it comes to money also i was at this point quite concerned that i have not yet seen any of my money back so i told them no, ever since then they have been really horrible to me i haven't heard a thing about my single or he release of the 2nd single and that Dexter the "promotional manager" wants me to thump him in his face the way he's dealing with me, so for now i am going to collect my stems from them and then want to concentrate on bringing these fraudulent mo fo's to their knees.
I think if a load of us work together this will be easily achieved.

They also mentioned coming along with £350 which I found a little strange.

Record labels are there to make money by discovering talent and investing in them. Not asking the potential talent to fork out cash.

I went there today as well for an audition. I was auditioned by a guy and he was already talking about money even before the audition. He was saying that the company was willing to invest £5000 and me on the other hand also had to invest as well which was £1800. Then he said as long as I had the potential, They still would offer me a record deal even if the audition didn't go very well. AVOID THEM AT ALL COST,THEY WONT MAKE YOUR DREAM COME TRUE BUT CRUSHING IT.

This is just so sad, I can't believe there are people who do this kind of stuff!! oh my gosh! Thank you Ben for putting this up on the internet so people will actually know who they are! I totally agree to all the comments that you wrote on this site, I myself auditioned for them one time and they did the same tactic where they told me that out of all the 250 people who auditioned, i was 1 of the 4! At first I was so excited and happy to hear it so I agreed to meet them up the next day but eventually turned them down because I felt how dodgy it can be like they're asking me to pay for £350 for deposit in cash, and that's just like the registration fee and then it goes up to about a thousand or two, I cant exactly remember but I know that you have to pay a lot in order for you to the a session with them. They also told me that someone from their team will produce my albums and promote me but then I have to pay like a thousand for that so in the end, i just have to give them a rubbish excuse and turn it down, but honestly its probably the best decision i made!

They are purely a money making business. If your friend is expecting to take her music further and get a possible music deal... IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN WITH DOWNTOWN. Unfortunately she has signed a contract which prevents her from receiving any refunds. My advice is quit while you can and don't pay them anymore money as there will be no promotion in the true sense. Just silly gigs at bars and few links on their website. Unfortunately they have a good convincing crook by the name of Ian who will spin and economise with the truth to make you believe they can help further your music career. In order to stop this fraud please complain to gumtree regarding their practises quoting ref 1113648275. Should you need anymore advice please contact me. They are liars and will tell you anything to get hold of your cash. Iv spoken to people who have handed over £2000 with little return. Music management companies DO NOT CHARGE YOU for contract. THEY PAY YOU. Many people Iv spoken to have lost their money and have had a bad experience. Truth is alot of the claims are false. It's purely a business. Paying these extortionate fees will do nothing to further you're music career. I paid £900 for 5 recording sessions, recording a song that we had little input on constructing. The staff are arrogant and don't really care about your music. They just want your money. They're are those who will pay crazy money for this but we are not wealthy middle class and need our money. We were lied to about the contact, the amount of auditionees and showcases. For this reason it is misleading and therefor a scam. I can put you in contact with jilted customers for clarity.



My advice is save your money. They cannot offer you anything you can't do for yourself for MUCH cheaper.

hey guys, Id like to put this notice out regarding music managment company Downtown Artists formally Play Studio Soho. This company are scam artists. BEWARE! they will list an advert in either gumtree or another free advertising site calling for talented musicians to sign to their label, you might call them and they will invite you Into their soho studio in berwick street. you may meet a creepy looking guy called ian and he will explain to you that there are over 250 auditionees but only 4 places within their label. you will sing in the studio and Ian will listen. you will then recieve a call later the next day informing you that you have been succesful. after assuming you are a very lucky and a talented person having made the shortlist of 4 of 250, they will invite you in to sign a contract they will then ask for £1900 to put you in contact with music moguls and record two tracks available for download on itunes. you will also be invited to sing at bars in soho where there will be record label reps and music industry observers (not true). this is a scam due to misselling they will not put you in contact with any music labels. they will not provide a recording contract. you have not made a shortlist of 250 applicants. they will take your money in return for weekly 1 hour recording sessions that will amount to nothing. if you are looking to record tracks and further your aspirations to become a musician stay away from this company they just want your money.

Truth is they will use many misleading claims to make you think you are about to embark on a music career.

Parents especially beware as they will prey on your love for your kids.

I paid £900 and got nothing in return apart from 5 recording sessions for my 15 year old daughter. The staff were arrogant and they made no attempt to contact us after we stopped attending. They demanded we paid a further £600 which we refused.

Beware. Do not hesitate to contact me if you are thinking of joining this scam company.
